Bit of CG-12 trivia---In a place called Rhodes Canyon--Heart of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico---There is the CG-12 Aft TALOS launcher. The Navy converted the operational Talos birds to supersonic targets (Name:VANDAL) and they were flown at White Sands for several years. I was working on the Navy MIRACL (High power laser) during the late '80s and early '90s and we shot down a Vandal in 1988 or 89.

Served on columbus from Feb '69 to Aug '70. Yeoman. Entered Navy in Nov '68 and first set of orders was PVR duty DaNang Vietnam. I said....... WHAT? No,No, I'm going over to the med--my brother (Terry) was on the Columbus and he had requested brother duty. The order was approved but got delayed so I hung around San Diego for a few weeks sweeping, etc. The Navy flew me over to France where I caught the ship. Terry was a yeoman also and entered in '66. I remember the 1st day most------did NOT salute the officer on deck when I first got there and I got my ass chewed good. I really liked the Columbus.

In January of 1975, our ship, the USS Newport News (CA 148)made her last "cruise" under her own power from Pier 7, NOB Norfolk, to St. Helena Pier in south Norfolk to begin her decommissioning. When we arrived the USS Columbus was there in the last month of her own decom. Those of our respective crews unfortunate enough not to enjoy apartments on the beach, shared less than luxurious (no stars!)accomodations for that month on a floating ghetto called an APL. ("Auxillary Personnel Living", I think.) I shall never forget how one of the Columbus's crew, a seaman, supplemented his income by hustling me in chess. I don't think I won a single game! I didn't mind, however. I looked upon it as paying for chess lessons from a superior player. I wouldn't mind, however, the chance to recoup some of my losses though! If that Columbus crewman remembers me and those days in Norfolk, and would like to play by email or snail mail, then please drop me a note and tell me what I looked like then. (I want him and not some even better ringer!) I'm rested; I'm tanned; I'm ready! Great site for one great ship! Smooth sailing always, Bob Schott SA USS Newport News (CA 148) 5/74-6/75

I served 1967 thru 1969 as a signalman with many fine folks. I am now in Iowa where there is very fiew bodies of water. I spent many (20) years in Chicago after the Navy. Sad to hear that the Columbus was scrapped, however, I realize she was on her second life when I was on board. Does anyone remember the cruise in the Med in 1967? Any Signalmen from those years Still around?

Is there a contact person who could possibly send a list of those shipmates who served aboard the Columbus during the years between approximately 1953-1958 and also who from those dates have attended reunions? I'm trying to encourage/convince my uncle to attend your next reunion and thought that he would be inclined to do so if he was able to recognize familiar shipmates who were taking part in your activities. Jim McFerrin & I reported aboard the USS Columbus CG-12 in Feb. 1963. She was in Bremerton, WA. I recall visiting many places: Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Long Beach, & San Diego. But, the very best event was when the USS Columbus CG-12 sailed from San Diego on 5 August 1964 for a WestPac cruise. We were in Hawaii (11-13 August). Guam was our next stop (23-24 August). We arrived in Subic Bay on 28 August,1964. Columbus visited Hong Kong three times (24-28 Sept) (16-21 Oct) & (31 Dec-3 Jan 1965). We visited Yokosuka (3 times), Sasebo (2 times), Kagoshima (3-7 Dec), Kure (16-18 Dec), & Beppu (18-21 Dec). We arrived back in San Diego on 6 Feb 1965. I left the Navy & the USS Columbus CG-12 in August 1965. I got to know many fine shipmates aboard "The Tall Lady". I look back on my time aboard her as some of the best years of my life. I wear my USS Columbus CG-12 cap every day. I would enjoy hearing from any shipmates from the good old days aboard the finest cruiser in the Navy.

Was on the Columbus in OE division from Oct 68-Aug 69. Made a great med cruise and took lots-o-pictures. I remember spending my first week working on the SPS-30 with Furmam A. Powell (aka John Wayne) but got demoted to R-390s when I couldn't figure our where the on/off switch was. I did find the best place for a nap - between the bulkhead and the SPS 30 equipment panel. Have lots of pictures of those days (and even some of this sites author). Wouldn't mind having them put up on the site.
