Jim McFerrin & I reported aboard the USS Columbus CG-12 in Feb. 1963. She was in Bremerton, WA. I recall visiting many places: Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Long Beach, & San Diego. But, the very best event was when the USS Columbus CG-12 sailed from San Diego on 5 August 1964 for a WestPac cruise. We were in Hawaii (11-13 August). Guam was our next stop (23-24 August). We arrived in Subic Bay on 28 August,1964. Columbus visited Hong Kong three times (24-28 Sept) (16-21 Oct) & (31 Dec-3 Jan 1965). We visited Yokosuka (3 times), Sasebo (2 times), Kagoshima (3-7 Dec), Kure (16-18 Dec), & Beppu (18-21 Dec). We arrived back in San Diego on 6 Feb 1965. I left the Navy & the USS Columbus CG-12 in August 1965. I got to know many fine shipmates aboard "The Tall Lady". I look back on my time aboard her as some of the best years of my life. I wear my USS Columbus CG-12 cap every day. I would enjoy hearing from any shipmates from the good old days aboard the finest cruiser in the Navy.

Served in T-5 division from August 1969 to December 1973, including 4 1/2 Med cruises. I inadvertently stumbled across the CG-11 site while searching for something else, and figured there had to be a CG-12 site - after all, we were the best of the class, right? Thanks to Paul Greene and the other contributors for keeping the memory alive (although the picture of the hull being cut up was just a bit depressing).

I remember the tall lady when she was at Norfolk down near the aircraft carriers and the Newport News. Couldn't believ how tall she was. As a signalman it must have beeen quite a view. I reported aboard CG-12 in Feb. 63 at Bremerton. I`d just completed Talos "C" school at Mare Island,CA. Have "fond" memories of being seasick along with at least half the crew. Enjoyed my years aboard and the great people I worked with. I left the Columbus in Aug. 1965 when my enlistment was over. Went back to college. Got my degree at San Francisco State. Then got my teaching credential. Taught public school for 27 years. Retired to a small town in Northern CA. I wear my USS Columbus CG-12 cap every day! I belong to the USS Columbus Vets. Assoc., VFW Life member,USN Cruiser Sailors Assn., and the American Legion. My Navy days were great. I really enjoyed my years aboard "The Tall Lady". Would enjoy hearing from "old shipmates". This website dedicated to the Columbus is simply too wonderful for words.

I was looking on the web for a picture of a ship for a manual I was preparing at work and typed in the USS Columbus CG-12 and hit this site. I was really surprised to see a site dedicated to the Columbus. I served as a dental technician on the Tall Lady from 1968 to 1969. After getting out of the Navy, I used my GI Bill to get my undergraduate and graduate degree. I now work for the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center at Port Hueneme as the Solid Waste/Recycling Program Manager. We provide compliance guidance to Navy and Marine Corps installations world-wide. My experiences on the USS Columbus have been helpful in my work. I’ll have to search for the pictures I took while on the ship.

I came aboard the Columbus in June '66, my first duty station as a marine, served aboard 19 months as security at the talos doors, including 6 months as the orderly, bar tender and driver for Capt. L.J. Stecher, One of the finest men I have met at any time of my life, I wonder where he is now. I made a med cruise, a nato cruise, many carib. cruises and that cruise up the Miss. to N.O. I saw pictures of (a midshipman cruise, I believe). I haven't completely read this whole site yet but it's really great to see someone do it to remind us of what a great duty station it was, especially for a marine like myself, where at the time (the late 60s)the alternative could have produced a much different result from the fond memories I have of the Columbus. Good luck to one and all. Bob Faelten
